Message from Denny

Dear Friends:

On July 4, the United States of America was 234 years old.  That’s a long time for a nation to remain free. But, when you look at our history in the context of world history, America is just a child among other nations.  Consider what a brief time we’ve been a nation.   When Thomas Jefferson died, Abraham Lincoln was a young man of 17.  When Lincoln was assassinated, Woodrow Wilson was a boy of 8.  And by the time Wilson died, Ronald Reagan was 12 years old.  There you have it.  The lives of four presidents can take you all the way back to the beginning of our great nation.

And yet we stand tall among all nations because of the principles on which our country was established:  “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that everyone is created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Thus begins the Declaration of Independence.  And don’t let anyone fool you.  Freedom ought to be celebrated.  So many churches and ministers today are reluctant to speak about patriotism from the pulpit.  I am not one of them.  I celebrate and give thanks for the freedoms with which God has blessed our country.  But with freedom comes great responsibility.  This

(Message from Denny – continued)

means that we are not set at liberty to pursue selfish ends or live excessive lives.

The framers of our great nation were serious about their political and religious freedom.  In fact, they made little distinction between them.  That is why the Declaration of Independence says that liberty is “a right endowed” not by nature, but “by God.”   Patrick Henry said, “I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.”

Throughout history, there has always been and always will be those who are opposed to freedom.  Paul faced it by the actions of the Jews.  Luther faced it in the Diet at Worms.  Lincoln fought it on the battlefields of Gettysburg.  Martin Luther King encountered it in the streets of Memphis.  And John F. Kennedy in his inaugural address warned the enemies of liberty:  “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we will pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of liberty.”

On no greater stage is this now being played out than on the streets of Baghdad and in the countryside of Afghanistan.  You and I will never know whether the blood we have spilled will have been worth it, for it will take 100 years to really see the fruits of our efforts.  Yet, I pray that our country maintain the course of its convictions, and in the end, democracy will win.  It was  the 18th century statesman, Edmund Burke, who said: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.”

The United States of American has never been a “do nothing nation.”  And we will fight for liberty and freedom because “we hold these truths to be self-evident.”

And, yes, my sermon on Sunday, July 4, 2010, was a patriotic one.

Faithfully,

Denny

Summer Ladies

Night Out Dinner

The Presbyterian Women will host an evening at Bennett Pointe Grill, 4625 Hillsborough Rd., Durham, on Tuesday, July 13, at 6:00 p.m.  A room has been reserved where we will enjoy dinner (self-pay), and we will have two “guest” speakers.

Faye Wills will talk about the work of FHI, the non-profit organization for whom she works.  FHI is a global health and development organization whose rigorous, science-based approach builds programs that create lasting change.  Founded in 1971, FHI maintains offices and staff worldwide, helping to forge strong local relationships that enable us to make measurable progress against disease, poverty, and inequity – improving lives for millions.

Dolly Daniel, an RN, board certified in Med/Surg nursing, and a Certified Diabetes Educator will discuss issues related to diabetes:  What is diabetes?  What causes it?  How do you take care of it?  What happens   if  you   don't?    These  questions

puzzle many people with diabetes. The good

news is that proper care not only makes you feel better now, but also markedly reduces the long-term problems that can come with poorly controlled diabetes.

(continued)

(Summer Ladies Night Out – continued)

Anyone who would like to join us for this event is welcomed.  A sign-up sheet is in the narthex.  If you are planning to attend, please sign up no later than July 11.  You may also contact Sandy McKee at 732-7906 to sign up.

High Seas Expedition

Children’s Summer Sunday School

Beginning Sunday, July 11, there will be a special summer Sunday School for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.  “High Seas Expedition” will be like a mini Bible School.  Every Sunday for approximately eight weeks, the children’s Sunday School will resemble Bible School.

During the Sunday School hour (10:00 a.m.), this will be in the fellowship hall.  In fifteen-minute  sessions,  Colleena Clark and

Charlotte McGhee will share a lesson, Shalyn Broadright will lead in a song, and Sara McKee will teach a craft.

Our children will experience the deep rolling waters of God’s love.  They will be learning that God’s love is true, comforting, surprising, life changing, and for everyone.

If you know of children who are in this grade group and do not have a church home, please contact the secretary.

Recognizing

Pastor’s Retirement

August 15 (Sunday) will be Denny Sebesan’s last Sunday in our pulpit.  He will officially retire August 31.  In recognition of this, we will have a covered-dish meal following worship on August 15.  Everyone is invited to enjoy food and fellowship as we wish Denny and Ann a happy retirement.

“Shall We Gather

at the River…?”

The kick-off of Little River’s year-long 250th anniversary celebration is scheduled for September 12, 2010.  Focusing on our history, we will return to the former practice of having a homecoming on the second Sunday of September.  Activities will include a luncheon on the grounds and special music – including bagpipe.  Monthly events will follow throughout the year, culminating in a large celebration on September 11, 2011.

Please mark your calendar, and plan to be involved throughout the year, as we recognize this significant milestone.

Thomson Tea Set

Given by Bonnie Birch

Bonnie Birch (Sherry Orlopp’s mother) has given our church a beautiful silver tea set and cake stand.  We greatly thank her for this and look forward to its beauty and use for years to come.

This tea set was given by The First Presbyterian Church of Miami, Florida, in May 1963, to their pastor, The Rev. Dr. William Kelty Cruickshank Thomson and his wife, Harriette, in honor of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.   It was used for many church functions.  This church was the first organized congregation in Miami. The present structure was built under the tenure of  Dr. Thomson, who served as its 11th pastor from 1932-1954.  The original building was on Flagler Street and served many WWII servicemen, but when the congregation outgrew it, a new building was erected on Brickell Avenue in the early 1950’s, and the original furniture and stained glass windows were used in the chapel beside the sanctuary.   Upon retirement, he served a little church in Kissimmee, but returned to the Miami congregation to be the Pastor Emeritus, visiting the sick and shut-   ins. In the early 1970’s,  Dr. and Mrs. Thomson moved to Tenafly, NJ, to live near their daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Herb Birch, whose daughter is Bonnie Birch.  The Thomsons spent many happy times with Sherry Orlopp.

OCIM’s Foods of the Month

July  2010

 juice and canned pasta meals

Many people requesting food from the Samaritan Relief Ministry are diabetic and/or on low salt diets.  Please consider including food that would be appropriate for these special dietary needs; such as, whole wheat pasta, sugar-free fruit and jelly, and low-fat sodium soups and vegetables.

Most foods should be sealed in cans or jars, so the food can be better protected.  Items may be placed in the basket in the  narthex.

Dear Orange Congregations in Mission Friends,

As you will see from the enclosed pictures, the shelves are once again, nearly bare at the OCIM food pantry. From January to June 2009, the Samaritan Relief Ministry  has provided groceries to 2,168 individuals, an increase of over 300 people from the same period last year.

The food pantry accepts any nonperishable food items as well as fresh produce from your gardens.

OCIM has been helping those in need of emergency assistance in northern Orange County for the last 28 years and fully expects to be available to those in need for many more years.

Can you join me in keeping the pantry shelves filled?

Sincerely,

Anggie Thompson

Samaritan Relief Ministry Chairperson and Vice President of the Board of Directors
